More and more cases of of AH1N1 influenza infection has been reported world-wide. It is spreading fast. With these, everyone should be alert to prevent the spread of the virus. We need to safeguard ourselves to keep us from getting the flu. Here are some guidelines we can follow:
1. Wash hands regularly using soap and water. Practice proper hand washing technique. Wash for 15-20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn't need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.
2. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
3. Try not to touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid crowds, handshakes, and social gestures. Cover your mouth with handkerchief or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
If you have flu-like symptoms, it is better for you to stay home. Do not come to work or school. Contact and consult immediately the physician near your place. Health care professionals are in the best position to determine if you need influenza testing.
